A high ATS score isn't the whole answer
Two-column layouts score lower because some parsers read across the page and scramble the order. That doesn't make them wrong — it makes them a risk worth taking only when a human sees the file first, like a direct referral or a small company with no tracking system.
Applying through a large careers portal? Take the single-column layout every time. You can send the prettier version to the hiring manager separately.
What lowers a score
- Text inside imagesAnything in a graphic is invisible to a parser, including your name.
- Tables holding job historyOften flattened into an unreadable single line.
- Headers and footersFrequently skipped entirely — never put contact details there.
- Invented section names“My journey” doesn't map to anything. Use Experience.
