How this calculator works

Deadhead is any mile you drive without freight — repositioning to a pickup, running back toward home, or moving to a market where there is work. The miles cost you fuel, tyres, maintenance and hours, and they earn nothing directly.

This calculator gives you the percentage, and if you add revenue it shows what those empty miles do to your rate per mile.

Just under twelve percent empty running costs 33 cents on every mile. The percentage sounds small; the per-mile effect is not.

Deadhead costs more than the percentage suggests

It is tempting to treat empty miles as merely unpaid. They are worse than that, because they consume things you have a finite supply of:

Fuel

An empty trailer burns less than a loaded one, but not much less. The fuel cost of deadhead is close to the fuel cost of paid running.

Driving hours

Empty miles count against your 11-hour driving limit exactly like loaded miles. Two hours of deadhead is two hours you cannot drive freight.

The 14-hour window

Repositioning eats window that a paying load could have used.

Maintenance

Tyres, brakes and the engine do not know whether the trailer is loaded. Wear accrues per mile.

Opportunity

Every hour spent repositioning is an hour not available for a load that pays.

Cycle hours

Deadhead is on-duty driving time, so it consumes your 60 or 70 hour cycle at the same rate as anything else.

Track it across a month, not a load

One bad trip is not a pattern. A single 400-mile repositioning move to reach a strong market can be a good decision even though it looks terrible in isolation.

What matters is the trend. Track deadhead across a month and you can see whether your lane choices, your load sourcing or your home base are structurally costing you empty miles — which is a question you can actually act on.

Why there is no target percentage here

A reasonable deadhead figure depends on your equipment, your lanes, how you source freight and where you are based. A flatbed operator running regional and a reefer operator running long-haul have genuinely different baselines.

This calculator gives you your number rather than a benchmark. Compare it against your own history — that is the comparison that means something.
