How this sleep calculator works
Sleep is not one continuous state. Through the night the brain moves through repeating cycles of roughly 90 minutes, each containing light sleep, deep sleep and REM. Waking in the middle of a cycle — particularly during deep sleep — is what produces that heavy, disoriented feeling, even after what should have been a long enough night.
This calculator counts backwards from your alarm in 90-minute steps, and adds the time it takes you to actually fall asleep. Landing your wake-up at the end of a full cycle rather than the middle of one is the whole idea.

A full night is usually five or six complete cycles — seven and a half to nine hours of actual sleep. Fewer than four leaves most adults short.
Time to fall asleep
Bedtime is not sleep time. Most people need around fifteen minutes to drift off, which is why the calculator adds it before counting cycles.
The night is not uniform
Early cycles are deep-sleep heavy, for physical recovery. Later cycles carry progressively more REM, which supports memory and mood.
