What these calculators are for

Two kinds of number decide a driver’s day. The first is regulatory — how many hours you can still drive, whether a rest period counts, what you owe in fuel tax. The second is economic — what a load actually pays once empty miles are counted.

These calculators cover both. The hours-of-service tools are built from published FMCSA rules and print the source and verification date on every page. The per-mile tools are plain arithmetic with the formula shown.

What they will not do

No calculator here returns “you are legal” or “you are illegal”. They report measured hours, time windows and the assumptions used. A compliance determination depends on your full record of duty status, your ELD and your carrier’s policies — none of which a web page can see.

The IFTA calculator is a calculation aid, not a filing service, and it will not invent tax rates. Enter the official figure from IFTA, Inc. and the arithmetic is identical.

Which one do I need?

  • Planning a split — Sleeper Berth Calculator, or Split Sleeper Berth to test a specific pairing.
  • How much driving is left — Hours of Service Calculator.
  • Quarterly fuel tax — IFTA Fuel Tax Calculator.
  • Is this load worth it — Freight Rate Calculator, then Deadhead Calculator.
  • What will I earn — Pay Per Mile Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Are these calculators official?

No. They are unofficial planning aids built from published FMCSA rules. The source and the date it was last verified appear on every page. Always check against your ELD and your carrier's policies.

Do they tell me whether I am legal?

No, deliberately. They show calculated hours, time windows and assumptions. A compliance determination is not something a web calculator can responsibly make.

Why does the IFTA calculator ask for the rate?

Official rates change every quarter across every jurisdiction. Rather than publish figures we cannot verify, the calculator lets you enter the official rate from IFTA, Inc. The maths is identical either way.

Do the FMCSA pilot programmes apply?

Not in these calculators. FMCSA runs pilots covering additional split options and a pausable driving window, but they apply only to enrolled drivers, so the general rule is used here.
